Marie Antoinette inspired rose dress
Project type
Fashion
Date
2025
The design and making of this dress were done by me for an internship project at Natalie Burton's company, Dressmakers. With her guidance, I was able to create this 5 piece look. I made bloomers, panniers, a corset, a skirt, and a pug purse. I layered and stitched fabric over a stuffed animal pug and added paint, d rings, a purse chain, and a collar with an embroidered tag. The purse was meant to represent Marie's dog mops from Sofia Coppola's "Marie Antoinette" film. I wanted to highlight Marie Antoinette's love of flowers with an emphasis on roses. I use rose pockets on the bloomers, floral fabrics within the corset and the skirt, and the upside down rose shape of the skirt to communicate this theme. I chose my color scheme to match with the aesthetic of the film, my personal style, and colors that would be found in a garden. The design choices are meant to pay homage to historical trends but with a modern and stylistic touch. I made a design, took measurements, used and made patterns, draped the fabric(for the skirt), used a mannequin for sizing, sewed and serged everything, and modeled for the photoshoot.
